The Art of Weaving

Last Weekend we joined The Houston Center For Contemporary Craft for their seventh annual Hands -On Family Festival, where our artisans demonstrated back-strap loom weaving.

Back-strap loom weaving is an ancient art that is still practiced throughout the world. The looms themselves consist of 5 to 7 wooden rods and are typically made by the weaver. Before weaving begins, the loom is tied to a post and the strap at the other end is tied around the weaver's waist.

Here, Shaw Meh from Burma is in the process of weaving one of the beautiful scarves. This process is very time intensive, and takes much skill and concentration to achieve the end result. This technique is what makes every scarf at The Community Cloth one of a kind and special.
